If tooth decay becomes severe, it can infect the tooth pulp, which contains the tooth’s nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. At this stage, a root canal treatment is necessary to salvage the damaged tooth and prevent tooth loss.
What is a Root Canal Treatment?
A root canal, or endodontic treatment, involves removing the infected pulp from the affected tooth and thoroughly cleaning the area. Left untreated, the infection can cause severe pain and spread to surrounding areas. It may also lead to tooth loss.
Benefits of Root Canals
A root canal can repair and save a severely damaged tooth. It is often the best option for recovering a tooth affected by extensive decay and infection. Root canals also protect the tooth from further decay or reinfection.
Root Canal Treatment
First, we will administer a local anesthetic to numb the area. Then, we will place a protective sheet (dental dam) over the tooth to isolate it and prevent the spread of infection.
Next, we will use a small dental tool to drill an opening in the tooth. Through this opening, we will remove the infected pulp using specialized instruments and clean the area. Afterward, the root canals will be sealed with a material called gutta-percha. Once the roots have healed, we will fill the tooth with a dental filling and place a crown over it to provide additional strength and support.
